Erin Newton is a
multi-disciplinary artist specializing in dance, choreography,
and visual arts.

Originally from Birmingham, Alabama, Erin began her training at a local studio, eventually dancing with Encore Performance company and training at the Alabama Ballet School under Tracey Alvey and Roger VanFleteran with instruction from Frederick Rocas, where she received accreditations in the Royal Academy of Dance Syllabus.

Erin is a graduating senior in the Fordham University/The Ailey School BFA program, double majoring in dance and visual arts with a concentration in architecture. Her work intertwines artistic disciplines to investigate how melding the unexpected can challenge perspectives and push the limits of collaboration between the arts.

 

In her time at Fordham, she completed the screendance project Dancing About Architecture: Movement in the Context of Designed Spaces in Berlin, Germany, under the Fordham Dean’s Creative Practice and Research Grant. Her Ildiko Butler Gallery thesis show Visceral Studies expands on her investigations of the interrelationship between movement and architecture with the inclusion of her architectural exploration Designing Motion.

Her choreographic work includes, "Hey, hi, how are you?" a contemporary piece which takes inspiration from Laurie Anderson's New York Social Life to observe how we participate in and perpetuate the habits and feelings of small, daily social interactions. She served as movement director and assistant director for the Fordham Studio Theatre play What Moves Me, devised by the company and directed by Narushi Fukuda.

 

She has furthered her dance training through workshops and intensives with Orsolina28, b12 Berlin, Sidra Bell Dance New York WINTER | MODULE24, Salt LINK, Perry Mansfield, Kit Modus, and Gallim. Erin has had the opportunity to perform in original works by Ben Wright, Alexander Anderson, Nicole von Arx, Christian Denice, Aaron Choate, Levi Marsman, Madison Hicks, and Rebecca Margolick. Additionally, she has studied the repertoire of Crystal Pite, JiÅ™í Kylián, Marco Goeke, Earl Mosley, Mark Caserta, Marco Palimino, and Jillian Mitchell.
